From a white sofa in Manhattan to the city rising behind it, Sylvia Sleigh subverted one of the most famous icons in Western painting — the Renaissance idea of Venus with a named sitter Johanna Lawrenson. Published for the first solo exhibition of Sleigh in London in 64 years, this book touches on forty years of her practice, from a self-portrait from 1941 to a 1980 portrait of a male model, across portraiture, still life, nudes and works en plein air. With a prologue by Daniel Malarkey and central text by Bella Kesoyan.
