In collaboration with Night Café I curated ‘Drift’, a solo exhibition of Graham Gussin. The exhibition brought together ‘Drift’, a series of 82 works on paper made during lockdown, a sculpture from the ‘Platforms’ series, and ‘Layout’, a newly conceived artist’s book. The show ran from 10 July until 5 September with a private view on Thursday 9 July, from 6 to 8 PM.
‘Platforms’ and ‘Drift’ were made alongside each other and both employ various graphic elements from a wide range of sources including science fiction, art history, philosophy, record covers, graffiti, and advertising. ‘Layout’ rises as a reaction to them, colliding with and informing each other, contributing to a fuller exploration of the same conceptual field.
Gussin’s work unfolds as a constellation of autonomous yet interrelated forms. In the exhibition, the drawings, sculpture, and the book are equal channels of thought, bringing about different perspectives and juxtapositions across the works. Together they suggest an architectural and archaeological sense where past, present and future merge, caught between a ruin and a proposal.
